Phil Jones Statue To Be Erected At Ewood

It is rumoured Blackburn Rovers Football Club are planning to erect a permanent monument to local superhero Philip Jones.

Jones recently joined Manchester United, completely ignoring the interest of Liverpool and manager Kenny Dalglish, who won the Premier League title as manager of Blackburn in 1995.

Blackburn fans were ecstatic at the news, many describing it as the greatest moment in the club’s history to sell a player to Manchester United.

Despite Jones being showered with messages of love and appreciation from devoted Blackburn fans, they have decided that more congratulations are in order.

The fixtures for next season will be announced later this week. The local council have stated that the date for the Blackburn Rovers v. Manchester United fixture will be declared “Phil Jones” day.

The day will start with the unveiling of the new Phil Jones statue. The Jack Walker statue will be melted down.

Then there will be an open top bus parade so Jones can greet his legions of adoring fans, who no doubt will flock to the streets in their thousands. Jones will throw Manchester United shirts down to local schoolchildren, encouraging them to follow him in support of United.

One fan stated, “There’s nothing we want more than our local children to support Manchester United. After all it should be all about trophies, not supporting your hometown club. Jones has shown everyone the way forward.”

Another fan stated, “I’m going to bake him some cookies when he returns with United. I hope the fixture is early in the season. It will be the happiest day of my life.”

When Jones finally arrives at Ewood, he will first visit his new statue before the Jack Walker stand is officially named after Jones’ girlfriend, who is enjoying her newfound popularity with Blackburn supporters.

There will be several other ceremonies, though time constraints will prevent Jones from appearing at the vast majority.

The Blackburn Rovers academy will be renamed the Manchester United academy.

A club official stated, “Jack Walker would be so proud. There’s nothing he would have wanted more than to see the Blackburn Academy produce players for Manchester United.”

The club strips will also be changed to plain white with a picture of Jones on the front.

The goal of the season trophy will also be renamed. One fan explained why…

“It was named after deceased local reporter Peter White, but we were never happy with that. He once accused Rovers fans of hating Manchester United. He was such a liar. We love them.

“He claimed we hated them so much it was a consolation when he joined Newcastle United. That’s why we booed Alan Shearer when he came back. We were desperate to see him join our heroes at Old Trafford.”

Another reporter was chased away for claiming that Shearer actually wanted to join Manchester United, but Jack Walker wouldn’t sell him to them. One fan, however, did comment…

“How dare people claim Jack Walker hated Manchester United. I’ve never heard such a hideous remark. He would be honoured to see his statue removed and replaced with a monument for such a fine, loyal young man like darling Philip.”

Another fan expressed outrage with Sky Sports, accusing them of doctoring past footage from the 1990s.

“Can you believe they edited it to make it sound like Blackburn fans were being hostile to Manchester United? It sounds like there were boos for goodness sake. Virtually all our home games were televised against them in the ’90s, and they always tried to hype it up as some sort of grudge match to spike ratings.

“They also removed the footage of us presenting Manchester United players with flowers and cheering them onto the pitch. Just recently they refused to show footage of our fans running on the pitch hugging and congratulating them when they won the title at Ewood.”

Another fan expressed regret at the title victory in 1995.

“We are deeply sorry for that. We were all hoping United would do it, but those Blackburn players were so selfish then.”

Benitez Whispers Increasing At Ewood

There are growing whispers particularly around Blackburn that Rafael Benitez has signed a pre contract deal to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers Football Club.

The main provision apparently is that this deal is subject to premier league status. One more win will probably be enough to secure that in the remaining games. Another provision is supposedly that there be full control over transfers even though Rovers did not sign a single player represented by Kentaro in January.

Certainly its no secret that there have been several comments relating to the future of Steve Kean. It is obvious that he is not strongly favored by the majority of Blackburn Rovers supporters short term or long term.

Personally I’ve always seen Kean as a victim of what Rovers failed to do last summer under the previous ownership. Absolutely no signings were made that proved to be of any use and nor were they ever likely to be. How can a club expect to finish in the top half again after that? The subject of who the manager is in my view would have made absolutely no difference. The unacceptable manner of defeat at Old Trafford in November proved this season was going to be a long, hard struggle. Which is entirely the fault of the previous owners

It makes sense for the owners to publicly back Kean because whatever some people think of him the man is giving nothing less than his best effort. Anything else considering the position he’s been given would be absolutely insane. There is no doubt he wants to be the manager of Blackburn Rovers next season and who can blame him? A victory over Manchester United would especially do wonders for his chances of being retained.

However the appointment of Benitez would prove that Kean was always intended to fill in as caretaker until the end of the season. I still hope of a huge move for Diego Maradona but obviously at this stage the chances of that being resurrected are slim to none.

Not everybody thinks Benitez is a certainty. Local reporter Andrew Cryer acknowledges the rumours but fully believes Kean will retain his position next season whatever league the club is in…and personally I’m very confident it will be in the top flight where this club belongs.

The appointment of a former European Cup winning manager would be a huge statement of ambition. Certainly it would address any questions relating to funding which have been grossly unfair considering January is a poor time for business. The players who were brought in would never have been here under the previous ownership.

I’m sure Rovers fans would respond well to the appointment though there have been a few disparaging personal comments particularly on the BRFCS forums.

Speculation today also linked Benitez to Aston Villa where Gerard Houllier looks set to be replaced. Don’t wish to be callous as I bear no ill will towards Houllier but who couldn’t see that coming after his history of health problems?

It can also be safely assumed that any replacement would not be a fat, northern person.

Anyone who would have a problem with Benitez being appointed is a fool. Anyone who thinks Claudio Ranieri would be a better option is an even bigger fool. His record of winning trophies speaks for itself. How many other high profile continental managers are available right now?

Whatever happens big names will be linked to Blackburn Rovers this summer (providing the remaining games go well) whether it be on the playing or management side. At the very least the sabotage by the previous owners last summer will not be repeated.

Sick Of The Williams Worship At Blackburn Rovers

Anyone who has witnessed the outpouring of sentimental tosh on Blackburn Rovers forums over the past few days would think John Williams had cured aids or something.

Williams resigned last week citing that it was time for him to move on with the club having a new way of doing things.

It was obvious that Williams resented the sacking of former manager Sam Allardyce. Judging by the recent comments from Steve Kean it seems there was clear breakdown in their relationship.

Williams and Allardyce were obviously very close. Indeed Williams was close to most of his managers. Maybe not so much Paul Ince who if you blinked you might have missed his spell in charge. However Williams still had to be pressured into sacking him as some rumours suggested by of all people the previous owners.

Ah yes the adored Walkers who due to their utter lack of interest in the club gave Williams almost total control over day to day running of the club.

Lets start by looking at the managers Saint John appointed.

He did not as some people claim appoint Graeme Souness. Due to Jack Walker being seriously ill Williams did most of the negotiating with Souness however there is absolutely no way Jack did not have final say in that appointment. By the way there is and only ever will be one JW.

He did appoint Hughes. He was hailed as a genius for this despite Hughes topping local polls for the position. Hughes is a manager who operates better on smaller budgets (compare the level of thought into his transfers at Rovers and those at Man City when he was like a kid in a candy store) and many would state he was highly successful. Personally I bitterly resented him for linking himself to the Man Utd job at every opportunity. If you know how much Jack Walker hated that club you might begin to understand and I hate them too. Of course the rovers fans who not so many years earlier chanted “we only hate Man United” and probably despised Hughes in the 90′s conveniently forgot this.

Then despite being hailed as a perfect genius who never made a mistake he appointed Paul Ince. So overall that would mean he got 2 out of 3 right when you get to his next appointment Allardyce. Wouldn’t look so impressive if it was 3 out of 5 would it? Williams turned down the likes of Henk Ten Cate despite his fine work at Barcelona and Chelsea in preference to Ince. Other wanted Michael Laudrup (who was sacked when he subsequently took a job in Russia) so he may have gone the same way of Ince. Apparently Laudrup wanted a clause that would allow him to leave for a major La Liga club. Apparently this was declined despite the previous manager Hughes linking himself to Man United as often as he liked.

If there was any clear fans preference in summer 2008 it was Alan Shearer who turned the offer down. He probably would have worked out as badly as Ince. Following that either Slaven Bilic or Michael Laudrup were next in most fans wishlist. I didn’t particularly mind either though I wanted the aforementioned Ten Cate for the role and he probably came up behind Bilic and Laudrup. In the end Williams (and I’m sure the board had a vote while the owners probably couldn’t have cared less) chose Ince who was probably somewhere in the middle. At the bottom of the list were Steve McClaren and GASP…Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce was eventually appointed of course with Williams conveniently hinting he would have appointed him months earlier had it not been for a negative fan reaction. Apparently Allardyce was incompetent and would have led Rovers to relegation. This despite him being a proven competent manager who could operate on minimal budgets (but like Hughes not really so adept at handling bigger budgets) but was considered to prefer a very unappealing style of football.

So when Allardyce (as I expected) proved to be a secure appointment some fans conveniently revised their earlier opinions. They would argue they are allowed to change their minds while I would argue they are 2 faced. All along however I felt he was a transitional appointment until the club got decent owners. Finally Venkys liberated the club on 19th November 2010 to scenes of apathy and general ingratitude from many people.

I thought Venkys would replace Allardyce at the end of the season. I was ok with this but following the absymal defeat at Old Trafford I changed my mind. Honestly i would have sacked Mourinho for that performance if there’s ever been a display that defines “unforgivable” that it is.

Allardyce was sacked a few weeks later having initially planned to visit Old Trafford that evening as a guest of Alex Ferguson. I can’t say I was happy about a Rovers manager being friends with him though I guess you can’t ban friendship. He was quite happy to go of course despite his team (always referred to as “they” never “we”) having been humiliated there just weeks earlier. Once sacked his personal pride was damaged and he cancelled his plans to attend the Man United game against Arsenal that evening. Says it all about Allardyce really.

Then Steve Kean was appointed. Having been accused of stabbing Sam Allardyce in the back he is now being accused of being an integral force in getting Williams to resign. He’s also been called arrogant despite in my view being far less than any of the past 4 managers especially Hughes.

Kean has breathed nothing but positivity into Blackburn Rovers as far as I’m concerned. However as I stated Williams and Allardyce were close. Kean stated that his relationship with Williams was strained compared to how it had been when he was just the first team coach. It seems Williams resented the firing of Allardyce because a mutual friendship had been built up with him.

Business is business. If you have to fire your own grandmother for the betterment of the club it is the right thing to do in my eyes.

Williams also possibly resented his role being reduced. Considering Venkys unlike the previous owners have shown an actual interest in the club this was always going to be the case.

There have been rumours too that personal family issues had made his decision to leave far easier.

Many state the irony that Williams had decided to sell to Venkys in the first place. He hadn’t. Rothschild did a lot of the work and the Walkers ultimately chose to sell to Venkys. The one time they do something helpful for the club some people about the decision. Shame they didn’t care about all the misery they inflicted.

Williams stated in 1998 that we “are already a big club and we are going to get bigger.” He still referred to Rovers as a big club (quite rightly) but constantly used the phrase “punching above our weight.” He did admit some fans were probably tired of hearing this and in my case he was right. Being starved to death by bad owners is not punching above your weight. I’m not the only fan who got sick of this. One of the few people who chose not to partake in the Williams love affair even said “good riddance” on the Lancashire Telegraph comments section due to being sick of hearing this and the general regional mentality. I wouldn’t quite go so far as saying “good riddance” but I could understand that fans thinking to some extent. Only surprise is he wasn’t accused of being me.

The club had a regional mentality under his reign after Jack Walker died. The last sponsorship deal was with a local company Crown Paints. They did at one time sponsor Liverpool when they were champions but as anyone who isn’t living in a cave for the past 20+ years can tell so much has changed since then. Crown Paints were never big enough and despite recent claims they have decided to end their sponsorship at the end of the season I believe Venkys have kindly allowed them to “save face.” There are already rumours of much bigger international sponsorship next season. Something that should have been accomplished by Williams if not for the “small town mentality” that has held the club down in the past several years.

So many people crediting him for his “genius” financial management. First of all he couldn’t have overspent if he wanted to. The Walkers wouldn’t have allowed even the slightest ambition never mind overspending. Secondly it was the managers who selected the players to bring in. What did that have to do with Saint Williams?

Oh but what about his “excellent cost effective initiatives” as some people would describe. Basically he reduced prices and more people attended therefore making up for the shortfall had the prices remained higher! What absolute rocket science!!! Who would have thought if prices were reduced more people would attend!!!

He was open and accessible to the fans. Of course considering the owners never spoke to the fans (other than a couple of exceptionally rare occasions) you would hope someone would try to make up for it. He had a gentlemanly image and would invite fans into his office for a cup of tea and a chat.

I myself spoke to him back in 2007 after I had been critical of him (as well as the owners) for quite some time. This was when there was no evidence of the club being up for sale. I wasn’t happy with claims from people including Williams that the club would be interested if new owners came along. I wanted to see some clear decisive action towards finding new buyers. Of course many fans rebuttal to my complains was that nobody would ever want to buy Rovers. You can’t blame me for shoving those words back down those fans throats. If that makes me seem arrogant so be it anyone would do the same after the irritation I endured.

I’m not claiming for a moment I sped up the process but just a couple of days after our meeting it was announced that Rothschild had been appointed. Williams had hinted at this in the meeting so I wasn’t surprised by the news.

I did leave the meeting with a better opinion of Williams but I didn’t proclaim him as a saint. Most of the 2006 official site forum posts are gone now (or were sent via email to supporters site brfcs and were posted by their admins) but at one time I was almost as critical of Williams as the Walkers. As I said part of this was because there was no evidence until Rothschild were appointed that there was a decent effort to sell the club. I believe my forum posts have been somewhat toned down since 2007 (some would find this laughable but virtually all of my 05/06 posts were written in pure rage.

I stopped my criticism of Williams mostly though I made it clear on numerous occasions that I felt the club had a parochial, regional, marketing approach. Before Rothschild were appointed I felt Williams was letting Jack Walker down as the owners starved the club while making no clear effort to sell. I still feel that by not standing up the Walkers everyone at Blackburn Rovers (whether that be staff or fans) let Jack Walker down.

However just because he let fans into his office for a cup of tea (I was offered one at our meeting but I’m not a fan of tea so declined) and reduced prices should not see him proclaimed as a saint. Even more laughable was him being described as a legend. The Lancashire Telegraph might as well have been renamed John Williams shrine the day his resignation was confirmed. One fans on the forums even suggested naming a stand after him! For what? I suggested that the Lancashire Telegraph had gone totally overboard in the level of worshiping and suggested he should be given the back page. The response was that they thought he “deserved” more than just that. The real story however as far as I’m concerned is who the new chairman will be and its not as if Williams departure is a shocker. It had been in the works for a while.

What about people like former chairman Bill Fox who at one time had sit down protests aimed at him in he late 80′s and 1990 before Jack Walker made his colossal impact. He had a far harder job than Williams did when there really was no money. Fox didn’t have ungrateful rich owners in the background stabbing the person who left them all that money in the back. Oh but I’ve read that he could be quite rude to the fans. So there’s the contrast between him and Williams. His job was far harder but he didn’t present a “friendly face” 24/7.

The stories about Jack Walker saving the club from extinction are wrong. He is already the ultimate legend as it is his impact does not need to be exaggerated. I’ve read clippings going back years in the local library and it seems problems were at their worst in 1983 several years before Jack bought the club in January 1991. Rovers would have survived had Jack not taken over. Today however I saw someone claim that the club would probably be extinct now if not for Williams. That would be laughable if it wasn’t so ludicrous. I’ll probably be abused for not treating Williams as a saint and I believe a lot of the praise is simply sheep mentality. If you look closely at Williams record as I have it is not as outstanding as some would have you believe. I don’t care if he was a nice guy. I wouldn’t care if he was the nicest man who ever lived that does not shield people from criticism.

People have described him as the best chairman of all 92 league clubs. Have people looked at every single chairman in the league and made a comparison to back up this claim. What about people like Steve Gibson at Middlesbrough who saved his club from extinction? I don’t think much of his taste in managers but saving your club from going out of business deserves nothing but the highest praise. Unless anyone ever saves Man United from bankruptcy (probably unlikely some oil baron would likely save them) in that case they should be accused of treason.

The people who should be getting this level of praise are Venkys. They are the ones who have brought ambition to this club. They did get a better reception last Wednesday (well overdue) and are now of course being accused of waiting until the days after the game to sort out the final payoff with Williams.

It is laughable in the extreme that I saw one fans accusing them of having no communication towards the fans.

In 3 months they have spoken to the fans more times than the previous owners did in over 10 years.

As for the new chairman I fully expect that announcement will be made in the next few days. You can guarantee that there will be complaints if it is someone from outside the club. Of course Saint Williams was brought in from outside the club back in 1997.

Of course if an “outsider” is brought in this would conveniently be forgotten.

Riquelme Offered To Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers have been offered the services of Juan Roman Riquelme according to sources from club unofficial websites and local media.

There aren’t many details as relates to the potential deal at the moment but presumably this will be the marquee signing recently promised by Mr Balaji Rao.

Judging by earlier discussion such a signing will probably be met with a mixed reaction. Ronaldinho for instance was regarded as “past it” by some supporters who had a preference for young up and coming stars.

Riquelme to some may be seen as past it probably even moreso than Ronaldinho. Certainly there is more basis to argue against Riquelme while Ronaldinho had a better record at Milan than some would lead you to believe. He also does not quite have the same marketing value as Ronaldinho would have brought to the club.

At 32 years old however I feel he still has a lot to offer moreso than David Beckham for instance due to the age cap. That is the main positive plus he will obviously come cheaper than Ronaldinho though I haven’t seen exact figures at the moment. The possible negatives are that if he proved to be a flop the marketing rewards would not make up for it quite so much as the potential Ronaldinho and Beckham deals would have.

Despite my reputation I have always thought positively when given good reason to do do and this bid gets the thumbs up from me.

The key point for those who might be making publicity stunt accusations is that Rovers have been OFFERED the player. Unlike Ronaldinho perhaps he wants to test himself at the top level once again.

Some would lead you to believe there will be more positive news to come before the end of January.

In words that echoed the life philosophy of the ultimate Blackburn Rovers legend Jack Walker it was stated by Bajaji Rao that “we need to think big.”

No matter what Venkys do it does not seem good enough for some and there will be objections to this news.

As far as I’m concerned however it would be crazy not to pursue this deal for a player of undisputed calibre.

Blackburn Rovers Set To Announce Santa Cruz Loan Deal

Strong sources on Blackburn Rovers related websites have indicated that Roque Santa Cruz is set to rejoin Blackburn Rovers.

It is well known that Rovers have been in talks with Manchester City over the past several days. The deal looked in danger of collapsing mainly due to MCFC hoping for a permanent deal.

However, they have clearly recognised this was never going to be likely (especially considering the injury record of the player) and have consented to a loan deal, presumably with Rovers picking up the entire wage tab.

Cruz was a big hit of course in his first season at Blackburn Rovers; he has never come close to regaining that form. It was a bargain deal for a couple of million pounds from Bayern Munich and it’s hard to credit Leslie Hughes because any manager with common sense would have done that deal for a player of his calibre.

Hughes paid a crazy amount to take him to Manchester City proving that the true test of a manager is when they have large funds at their disposal.

The initial reception seems positive, though obviously there is less of a risk factor bringing in players on loan. I wasn’t happy with the attitude of Cruz when he was looking for his move to Man City, though I suspect he was being encouraged by a certain individual to act in this manner.

Earlier today, Rovers also confirmed the appointment of John Jensen as assistant manager until the end of the season. Jensen is represented by SEM therefore people will complain about the involvement of Jerome Anderson due to the groups involvement with Venkys.

I don’t see any problem on paper Jensen has a better record than the past few assistant managers both as a player and a manager. His most successful work as an assistant came while working with Michael Laudrup at Getafe in Spain.

Last month, I commented on here regarding the rumour linking Diego Maradona to Rovers. This rumour has surfaced again following Maradona’s comments about visiting England for talks with an unnamed club in February.

This is around the time during which Anuradha Desai will visit Blackburn for the first time.

Naturally redtop media have linked Maradona to Rovers. There really isn’t any basis to link him to any other English clubs (attending a match at Fulham is hardly reason to believe he will go there and Lerner at Aston Villa seems a little too boring to appoint Maradona) so you can’t really blame the likes of The Sun for reporting it may well be Rovers.

As I said last month on here, I would certainly support his appointment in any capacity.

I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks about the Ronaldinho bid; that offer was genuine and the only reason Venkys made it public is because they tired of waiting for an answer.

Venkys Abolish Comfort Zone Mentality At Blackburn Rovers

For over five years, I have waited for someone to abolish the comfort zone mentality at Blackburn Rovers Football Club.

Three days ago, Venkys did exactly that with the ruthless firing of Sam Allardyce. Personally, I would have done the exact same thing with one big difference—he would have been sacked even sooner.

Hopefully there are many more pink slips ready to be issued. Apparently. Venkys have hired one company to conduct a thorough review of the club’s internal staff. Excellent.

Recently Anuradha Desai accurately stated that the club’s marketing has not been “proactive” enough.

Presumably, she believes that marketing phrases such as “small town in Europe” are as small minded and parochial as I do. It’s time for some global ambition, not to have the fans chanting “small town in Europe” like a bunch of brainwashed sheep.

She does not need to look too far for a new slogan. The perfect phrase to use would be “think big,” the mentality that Jack Walker stood for.

Clearly it is the mentality Venkys stand for. No more talk of “punching above our weight.” No more parochial attitude.

That’s exactly what concerns the more small minded element within our fanbase. The element that would rather spend their every breathing moment obsessing over boring, parochial trash than thinking big.

Jack Walker would have agreed with the decision. He sacked a manager who did not fit the right image for Blackburn Rovers. He would have preferred this over seeing the club starved to death by the people he trusted.

Allardyce didn’t care about Rovers. It was always Blackburn to him, never Rovers. I don’t blame him really; I wouldn’t care either after people protested against his potential appointment in summer ’08. People say he has done a competent job.

What else did they expect from him were they expecting him to get the club relegated?

He was thanked for the job he did. There’s nothing wrong with how he was treated. The fact that he was planning a visit to Old Trafford prior to his sacking justifies it even more. After that thrashing a few weeks ago, you would think he would be too ashamed to show his face there from embarrassment.

As for his pal Ferguson, I couldn’t give a damn what he thinks.

As for the players, they should keep their mouths shut. They should still be begging forgiveness for the Old Trafford display against the club Jack Walker hated. It will be a long time until they get even close to forgiveness from me.

I have absolutely no sympathy for the fans who are planning protests this weekend. Mainly because there is no reason to feel sympathy to begin with. All Venkys are doing is what is best for Blackburn Rovers.

The ruthlessness of the sacking was essential. It sends out a message to the rest of the staff at Ewood. For too long they have enjoyed minimal supervision from the previous owners who didn’t give a damn. The marketing has been substandard (small town in Europe again) and who can forget the Sports World garbage.

Apparently, John Williams was in tears over the sacking if Alan Nixon (Daily Mirror) is accurate as he normally is. Boo hoo. I wonder how he would have felt had they sacked his “purely there on merit” son, Simon Williams.

I think back to all the times I was driven to the verge of tears because of the misery caused by the Walkers. Especially prior to 2007, when the club wasn’t up for sale. It’s a shame nobody threatened to resign when they made no money available in the summer as usual. No coincidence that they waited until the club was sold to conduct their recent business with Flybe. They couldn’t have tolerated Rovers asking for any kind of windfall.

Only a few people ever felt sympathy for me. What goes around comes around.

Ewood Turns To Maradona

A few months ago I suggested that Blackburn Rovers consider Diego Maradona as a possible replacement for Sam Allardyce.

The reaction was mostly laughter and mockery by people who simply could not see the merits of my argument for such an appointment.

Judging by news earlier tonight however it appears Venkys are thinking the exact same way.

Somebody with prestige and a global following is exactly what is required for Blackburn Rovers Football Club. For too long the club approach has been parochial and regional. The appointment of Maradona could put an instant end to the attitude that has held this club back for so long.

Venkys want the best for this club why not try for the biggest name around? He would be a marketing dream. The current management in the words of Anuradha Desai have not been proactive enough. They have been operating in a comfort zone. Its about time they either change their attitude or get a pink slip shoved in their face.

Now I know people question Maradona’s management but there would be other massive upsides to an approach. He does not have the reputation of a tactical genius. He may never be a tactical genius but he is the figurehead with the attitude that Blackburn Rovers has been lacking. As for his cheating against England I personally couldn’t give a damn. It was over 24 years ago its time people got over it.

As for Allardyce he was what was is. A good, competent manager but I’ve said all along he should be seen as a transitional appointment until the club gets a decent owner. He was Northern and boring. Maradona taking the chair of power at Ewood would not do the word sensational justice.

There are of course those who think this is lunacy. They clearly don’t want to raise the international profile of this club. They would rather spend year after year going on and one about tedious local obsessions. BORING.

Those people do not understand the concept of “thinking big.” They are the one who are the problem at this club. It is time for a new BRFC Attitude. An attitude that Jack Walker would have approved of.

Venkys may be about to fire the shot heard around the world.

Blackburn Rovers RIGHT To Sack Allardyce

As far as I’m concerned, Sam Allardyce was nothing more than a competent transitional manager for Blackburn Rovers Football Club.

There has been speculation in recent weeks relating to his future, but today’s news was a bolt from the blue (and white). Very recently he spoke highly of the new owners.

It appears to have been a brutally swift decision from Venkys. However, appearance can be deceptive. I’m sure Venkys have thought long and hard behind the scenes prior to making this decision.

It was only back in the summer of 2008 that people protested about his possible appointment. Obviously, that was the factor in the decision to appoint Paul Ince instead. He has not changed in any way whatsoever since then. His style of management is still the same and he has always been a competent manager. I don’t see any reason for certain fans to change their initial views. He is not a great manager except in his own mind.

He recently presided over a disgraceful result at Old Trafford. I’m surprised that the decision wasn’t made then. That result on his own is a good enough reason to remove him.

Venkys obviously have spoken of greater ambitions. Recent rumours have suggested there will be a lot more than five million available in January. They have spoken of wider ambitions. Charles N’Zogbia has been linked recently, but it is also expected they intend to fund a top striker. That would surely take spending in January to 10 million plus.

This is exactly the route Blackburn Rovers need to take. Allardyce had a northern image despite his Midlands background. The club needs to get away from a regional, parochial mentality. If the club wants to market across India (and across Lancashire) then a manager with a stronger image is needed. Allardyce is a man who blamed his surname for not getting the England role.

The earliest suggestion I’ve seen is Martin Jol. That would certainly be a reasonable appointment. As I write this, Ian Holloway is being spoken of. Why on earth would Allardyce have been sacked to bring in someone who may prove to be a one hit wonder?

As long as the replacement is right, then Blackburn Rovers have made the correct decision.

Blackburn Rovers Present Case To Bring Back Public Hanging

In 13 years of support I have never witnessed anything so pathetic and gutless as the “performance” displayed by Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford today.

Losing to a club I despise as much as Manchester United is a painful enough experience for me under any circumstance, but normally it is understandable. I knew going into this game that Rover wins at Old Trafford have been few and far between.

What I can not understand, or forgive, is the sheer ineptness of the players today. After recent performances and a takeover you would expect the players to have gone into this game in a confident mood.

Instead they put on a display that ranks up there as the most cowardly and passionless I’ve ever seen.

Rovers have suffered heavy defeats before of course. A 5-0 loss at Chelsea last season for instance. However that fixture did not mean even half as much to me as games against Manchester United do.

Anyone who wants to bring back public hanging should simply show a recording of the full 90 minutes of this game to those who oppose it. That might be enough to turn them into full fledged supporters.

All the apologies in the world will not make up for what I saw today. Even a quadrupled refund of the ticket price would not make up for this level of torture.

No apology from players and management will make up for this, certainly for me at least. A public horsewhipping wouldn’t be good enough.

I feel sorry for Venkys, whose been nothing but positive for the club thus far. There couldn’t be a worse advertisement than this to promote Rovers to potential Indian fans. The new owners are owed an apology. I’ve quickly read the BRFCS forums and it has been claimed they are absolutely furious. Of course that is just hearsay, but I can’t imagine them being pleased.

Jack Walker will be turning in his grave. His takeover of Blackburn Rovers led to a title win with closest challengers ironically enough Manchester United. Back then people used to give a damn about this fixture. In the last few years I feel like the only one who still cares…

Most Rovers fans are angry of course but not as much as they ought to be. I’ve seen one or two though who have astonishingly claimed they don’t care. Manchester United probably would have won today on the basis of their performance but they couldn’t have had it any easier.

Jack Walker hated Manchester United. The 94-95 team gave everything they had to win the title. They weren’t the most attractive, skilled team to ever win the title but they sure as hell worked their backsides off. People like Colin Hendry would have shed blood to beat Manchester United, that’s how much it meant to them. Back then it used to mean something to the fans as well.

Today, the players couldn’t have given a toss. Any fans who don’t care about what happened today clearly couldn’t give a damn about the effort of the title winning squad in 1995. The team might as well have urinated on Jack’s grave with this display.

I really can’t think of one word suitable enough to sum up this performance. Disgusting, pathetic, gutless, cowardly, etc the list may as well be never ending.

I’ve been in such a great mood over the past few days since the takeover. I was so happy to finally see the club liberated at last after 10 years of diabolical ownership. I thought it might be at least a month or more until someone connected with Rovers did something to ruin it…

Well “ruining it” would be understatement of the century.

If Venkys initially weren’t going to make any hasty decisions the pink slips may be coming out a hell of a lot faster now.

Initial Backlash Should Not Prevent Ewood Renaming

Friday Nov. 19, 2010, will hopefully go down in history as a great day for Blackburn Rovers Football Club.

The reign of new owners Venkys London Ltd. kicked off with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa broadcast live on Sky Super Sunday.

Not a particularly memorable game for what happened on the field, but certainly a significant event in the history of Blackburn Rovers.

The Sun newspapers website described the reception for the new owners as lukewarm. It wasn’t a bad response, but certainly not at the level they deserve for liberating the club at last.

It is perhaps understandable that new owners be greeted with a degree of trepidation. The takeover of course is huge news in Blackburn but not exactly a shot heard around the world. It’s not as if they have promised spending on a scale of Manchester City proportions.

However, certain issues have clearly been misquoted or taken out of context. The 5 million investment for January transfers is only the initial amount planned.

Many have overlooked the statement from Mrs. Anuradha Desai that more significant spending will be planned for the summer. I would certainly expect it to break the 10 million mark.

The main issue being discussed right now would be the planned renaming of Ewood Park stadium. The vast majority of BRFC supporters are against such a move.

There will be a backlash, but I personally predict it will subside and quickly. Talk of boycotting the stadium in almost all cases will amount to nothing more than an empty threat.

Personally I feel every stadium in the top flight will ultimately be renamed. There is no reason why Ewood Park should be any different.

This is the 21st century and what modern day football is all about. Blackburn Rovers are not the only club who can claim to have “tradition.”

Plus the Ewood Park name may still remain with a sponsor simply attached to it. For example, Venkys Ewood Park.

I read some comments on the Lancashire Evening Telegraph website this morning. Someone asked what Jack Walker would have thought, a question I have posed many times over the past few years.

Only when it suits them do BRFC supporters seem to give a toss what Jack would have thought.

Knowing what Jack would have thought has weighed heavy on my conscience over the last five years. I have zero doubt that Jack would have been disgusted by the actions of the previous owners.

I also have no doubt that he would have been very much against the renaming of Ewood. This is a man whose attitude was Ewood Park or nowhere when the stadium was rebuilt.

However, it is a small price to pay as far as I’m concerned. The ramifications for the future of this club would have been far worse if the previous owners hadn’t been removed.

If there is anything Jack would have hated, it’s seeing his club starved of funds by the ingrates who inherited it.

For five long years I’ve constantly been pro takeover. Thanks to Venkys, hope and ambition has returned to Blackburn Rovers.

So a win over Aston Villa kicks off the new owners’ reign and next up is a massive clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford. How great it would be to end an excellent month with a win over them.

If there’s anything Jack Walker loved more than anything it would be winning at Old Trafford.
